I've got at least 11 pieces of equipment that need controlling in my HT setup. About half have RS-232 ports.

I have been assuming that I can control these devices simply by loading my database with IR codes from the original remotes, or, when available, discrete hex codes from Remote Central, or the manufacturer. That somewhat formidable task has now been completed.

I have assumed, however, that once I program the RFX9600 units to receive the transmissions from the TSU9600, that these codes will work via RS-232. Am I wrong? I can probably go all-IR, but would prefer not to if I don't have to.

Thanks,

Nick

That is not a valid assumption.

Some devices will accept IR commands in RS232 envelopes, but all components handle this differently. Also the RS232 protocols differ by component as do IR protocols.

In general there is no relationship between IR and RS232 in structure or design

I don't know any way of learning the remote commands except by teaching them via IR on the remote, or by pasting hex codes.

Where would I find the RS-232 codes, if I can't get them this way? I know that the components I'm discussing accept RS-232, because they are currently being controlled that way via a Crestron system.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

Usually, the serial communication protocols are available as manual addendums or app notes. Check the websites of the component manufacturers for details.

I obtained the serial commands for my Denon AVP-A1HDCI. Looks like I'll be going strictly IR ;)

Thanks,

Nick

I use RS232 (Pronto 9800, RFX9600) to completely control my AVP-A1HDCI in our dedicated HT (as well as many other components). Works great. SJ
