The pronto PAL which is a stand alone PC based program that supports a pronto PRO in much the same way as a Crestron controller supports the Crestron touch screens; has always had a picture frame service process. The PAL manages the folders and allows the user to select on the Pronto what folder is to be used. It supports multiple Prontos all doing different picture shows, and keeps them alive with the screen on under the assumption that they are probably docked or soon will be. It uses seven random transitions between slides to make it interesting.
It does not support a 9400, looks good on the 9600 and great on the 9800. In my home when a pronto is booted the user has 30 seconds to start a slide show which turns it into a digital picture frame otherwise it dedicates itself to the room it is in (e.g. Theater, Master bedroom, Guest bedroom, etc.).
The Pronto PAL has many other functions besides the support for Picture frames:
It handles all IR providing you either have a USB-UIRT attached to your PC or have a Global cache located on the network that it can reach.
It acts as a global string repository across multiple Prontos on the same network
It answers the Question "Who AM I? based upon a static IP address being assigned for the Pronto or a "permanently Leased" DHCP address. It returns a string that you set up as part of the IP/Name pair.
It takes plugins which are written as windows dll's (The picture frame is just such a plug in, while IR support and Who Am I are native to the PAL) that can do all sorts of complex logic and issue RS232 commands from the PC. There will be an SDK on how to write the dll with a base model.
It talks to the Homeseer Home automation system and can relay commands from the Pronto to Homeseer and return results of Homeseer function to the Pronto.
The Picture Frame Plugin comes with the mating xcf for the Pronto which can be easily integrated into your own xcf as the "default" home activity as it is in mine.
If you are interested in the PAL, there is additional documentation on my web site (

If you have followed this forum you know I do not give things away for free, but have a pricing model that is reasonable for what you get.
