I don't know if this has been covered yet. Does anyone know if the new RFX-9600 serial base will be 2-Way. I would love to get volume status from my Meridian G-68 Processor back to the TSU-9600. Thanks in advace, Joe.

2-way communication is usually reserved for the Crestron/AMX type of control panels.

Maybe I don't get it. I thought that RS-232 is included so that 2-way can be supported.

That is what I thought aswell, It would be nice if aomeone from Cedia or with some inside info could chime in and clear this up.

The serial command set is usually far more extensive than the IR Command set. Unidirectional RS232 is common with high end panels, superior reliability and a more extensive command set when compared to IR.

I don't remember hearing anything about 2-way RS-232 at Cedia, Dave do you remember??

One way is becoming a little more common these days, URC has just come out with it and RTI has had it for a while.

Like most have said in regards to 2 way RS-232, it is not cheap to impement. The most inexpesive Crestron processor I know of is just over a grand, and that is bare bones for Crestron prcessors. RTI's 2-way processor has been pushed back and is gonna retail at around $1400. I believe URC's product is also 1 way RS-232, do remember price on this.

The most cost effective 2-way RS-232 solution I touched is Elan SC-4 with very short list of supported 2-way devices.
Crestron QMI-RMC with TPS-4L (or TPMC-4X) is the smallest full-featured 2-way solutions.
There are too many issues in RS-232 communications, especially in 2-way. Crestron's modules for control devices by such type of communications are the most complex of all within user projects.
I don't think that Pronto or other universal remotes will provide this functionality.

They are expecting to release many, many more files to be compatible with a lot of devices soon - I hope. The SS1, when it becomes available separately will be equally as cheap and do a lot more.

Roddy - Nice seeing you at CEDIA. I am not certain but my sense is it will be two-way, using the wi-fi as the 2nd direction. This is the same way RTI is implementing their two-way, if I recall correctly.

I believe only RS-232 is via a wire for advanced control and feedback. Via the wireless you can access things on the network like the Escient units. Someone smarter than me can explain it much better, I am thinking metadata.

Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though.

the TSU9600 shown at cedia was operating a Lutron radio Ra system in 2 way RS232 application over wifi using the more advanced network extender.
