My module is not free.

Please pardon my abrupt tone. However, a search for +Weather +Module is simply too easy. Might want to try a search next time, especially since the thread is on Page 1 of this forum as I write this.

[EDIT]
FYI, I know the link in first post is broken. However, RC mail or email the author and I bet he has a new link.

Frankly I don't blame him for posting the question. It's not in the files downloads and if your an old user of other Pronto's you 'kind of' assume the file would be available there. The author (PS2) did not respond to my request for the script. I finally got mine last night from Sunti (Thank you!) but there is no reason this should be an easter egg hunt or beg for software. Why the non-pay version(s) are not available in the file downloads is just silly.

This outright ridiculous. I spend my time on the script to get it the way I wanted. Writing a script does not place it in the public domain. And I do not have a legal nor moral obligation to distribute it or place it in file download area. I do not charge for it and have been sending it out to people. In most cases, recepients did not even bother to acknowledge the receipt of the module. I do not care about that, but I do care about your criticism. I do have a professional job and I have a lot of international travel. I just came back from one and do not always have the time to come here or follow up on the private messages. There is a saying about not looking a given horse in the mouth. I do notice that you thanked Sunti for giving you a copy which he or she is not supposed to do but not to anyone who really contributed to the weather module including the original author darshak40.

I will no longer distribute my version of the weather module and I apologize to those who have requested a copy and have not received it as I won't be wasting any of my time on it any further.

PS2,

Thank you VERY MUCH for your comments.

The saying is "Do not look a gift(not given) horse in the mouth". This saying originates from the olden days when someone was going to buy a horse, they would look at its teeth to see just how well it had been taken care of. It was considered a very rude insult to look at the teeth of a horse that was given to you for free.

PS2 and Sunti,

Please also see my comments here.

Why don't you spend a hundred or so hours of your free time writing a good reliable script for the Pronto and then listen to people whine about how they can't get it for free or can't find it or don't have someone drop everything to help them RIGHT NOW. I have been a beta tester for Lyndel for just about everything he has ever written for a Pronto. He has been working on the EscientPronto module for more than six months and I have 44 different beta versions to prove it. I'll bet I have 60 hours of my own time in it. I have also done some testing for Barry and I can tell you that these guys put a huge amount of time and effort into everthing they write. Just because someone decides to make his hard work available for free doesn't mean that he should jump through hoops to make sure everyone can have easy access to it. People who make comments like this only succeed in discouraging other people from giving of thier time to help out this community. On behalf of the people who have benefitted from those who have given thier time to add functionality otherwise unavailable to the remotes that we find so indespensable I would Like to appologize to PS2 and hope that he will reconsider his decision,

Tom

Although everything has been said, let me just contribute my 2 cents to that.
I have about 7 PS modules either on my webspace or harddisk. This includes games (Prontonoid, Kazamm!, Sento) and applications (IMdB Browser, Weather module, RSS Newscrawler, Pron2chat).
All of these (OK, weather and IMdB not) have been made public by posting in this forum. But like every software, there can be bugs changes etc.
Having them on my own webspace lets me update versions way faster than always bothering Daniel with another copy.
Also, it might be likely, that I intend to distribute those modules commercially in the future.
Else: just because it's for free, it does not mean, that everyone can distribute and give away those modules.
I don't know how many hours I have spent on the modules, but if you look at the graphics of Kazamm! you might get an idea.

Quite honestly, no script is "free". Someone always pays. An author who has provided a "free" script assumes a huge time cost for support as someone almost always has trouble getting something running. So, even if something is "free". The author, IMO, should not be bludgeoned for simply not providing a simple download as each download costs him/her significant chunks of time.

If ProntoScript was "easy" then everyone would be doing it. Previously, you had pretty much static configurations that were assembled. Now you have these complex beasts that interleave IR codes and other actions with real programmed Javascript code. With this complexity comes support costs. What, you say? "Lyndel is crazy!". Maybe so, but...

Just have a look at the size of the "Free Weather Module" thread. So many questions. Then, have a look at Andre's RSS Reader thread. Next, have a look at the Kazaam thread. Then, for anyone who might be interested in going back to the oldy-moldy days, have a look at the SuperNudelist support thread in the Classic Pronto Forum over 34 pages of questions/how-to's/comments.

Even "free" software takes time to support, nurture, and maintain. There is a cost, even if it is not monetary.
