I have used the stock programs on my pc to make pictures into buttons, and on a 7500 I could do some editing and get transparency by using the 'use color in upper right for transparency' thing, but what does PEP want to do it? I have tried using the pics as bmp and png, no luck, white backgrounds, black backgrounds, I have tried cut and paste over stock gallery images, and it always has the white background around my circle button.
What's the fix?

You are best off using a graphics program to create png images with transparency already in them.

I am pretty sure they have to be png files to be transparent

I can make them be png files in the program I have (MS Paint) but how do I get the transparency? Do I need to use a specific color for background? Or is there some option I don't know about?

To do transparency, you need to use a graphics program that is designed to support multiple layers or images with an "alpha" channel. MS Paint is not the best in the world for this. Use something like Photoshop or PaintShop Pro 7/8/9/10 or freeware/shareware tools such GIMP or LView Pro. You can do a google search for Gimp or LView Pro.
The Help file in the software for the older NG remotes (ProntoProEdit NG software package) describes how to create tranparent images using PSP or Photoshop.

Paint Shop Pro rocks, I use it exclusively and they have a PNG optimizer built right in.
