Got a great deal on a Sony AV receiver, model STR DN 1000. Reason for the deal is that it was an open item at Best Buy and was missing the remote, RMAAP040. Unfortunately, Sony has discontinued the model and has no remotes. Does anyone have a recommendation for a remote that will control a Samsung 55 inch LED TV, a Time Warner cable box, and a Samsung Blu Ray DVD player, all run through the receiver?

There are probably other universals that will work, but I know that the RCA RCRP05B ($20 at Best Buy or Walgreens) or the OneForAll URC-8820N/10820N (Sears) will work. The BluRay player requires a fairly new remote design, since it uses a recently developed IR protocol.

Thanks for the recommendations. I had purchased a Sony Universal to power the receiver. However, the integrated remote commander, RM VLZ620, was not versatile enough to permit to assign the components in the receiver. I tried to run the tv cable through the receiver as well as the blu ray but no sound came through the television. Eventually, I will connect my 5 speaker surround sound system but I doubt if it will work until I find the correct remote which allows me to assign the components in the receiver. Does this make sense? Or will one of your recommendations be versatile enough to do what I described?

Both those remotes should allow you to do anything you could do with the factory remote once properly setup.

I assume that you want to be able to select among the HDMI inputs and various outputs, and to be able send commands like "GUI mode", etc. Sony universals (and most other universals) can only send these functions if the original remote exists to teach the commands to the universal.

However, the remotes I recommended above (RCA RCRP05B, and OneForAll URC-8820N, both made by UEI) can be programmed on each button to send the needed IR signals. You can then use the UEI-manufactured remote directly, or if you prefer the VLZ620, it can be taught from the UEI remote. Note, however, that some VLZ620 remotes don't appear to learn correctly.

Many of the functions that are used in a receiver don't have corresponding button labels.  For example, no universal will have a button labeled "GUI mode".  So you'll need to identify mnemonic choices for the unusual buttons, or maintain a "cheat" sheet.  I personally find that I actually use very few functions on a receiver, once it is setup to my liking. It may also make sense to use macros to send a sequence of commands to setup the receiver and TV or BluRay player.

The UEI remotes will use setup code Audio 2172, and of course functions like volume, mute, power, etc. will work out of the box.  The specialty functions will need be programmed (by you) by assigning  5 digit "EFCs" to the buttons you've chosen.  Here are the known Sony functions for receivers.

If you choose to take this approach, I will post the procedure for assigning EFCs.  I'll also convert the Sony function numbers into the necessary 5 digit EFCs, and post then here.

OK, here's a start for the Sony.
Use setup code Audio 2172, and make sure the remote is in Audio device mode.

You can test any of the below functions by tapping Setup and entering any 5 digit EFC. When the 5th digit is pressed, the IR signal will be sent.

You can semi-permanantly assign an EFC to a button by (again in Audio device mode):
1) Press Setup until 2 blinks
2) Enter 994 (2 blinks)
3) Tap Setup
4) Enter the 5 digit EFC
5) Tap the button to be assigned to.  (success indicated by 2 blinks)
The 9XX Command instructions give more detail.
Below are function name, EFC, and IR protocol information.  Probably not all functions are listed; see the Sony IR function list fo other possibilities.  Post missing ones, and I'll convert those to EFCs.  Of couse, some of the below functions are already programmed into 2172.

For the Samsung TV, try TV 0812, for the BluRay Video 0199, and just guessing here since you didn't mention the actual model of the set top box, either Cable 1877 or 1376. Again, we can augment the built-in setup codes with EFCs for the TV and BluRay if necessary.

Finally got time to connect all components. With your advice and the $15 universal remote from Sears (RCA Universal Remote RCRP05B) we hooked up everything. The sony av is driving great sound from a Polk audio surround system; the samsung LED looks awesome and the room is filled with crisp sounds. Had a guy who is a audio videophile who specializes in car audio balance the sound system. He was very impressed with your expertise. I really appreciate your input on this project. It's not a home run; it's a grand slam.

Well going the universal route is definitely an option, but if you just need to buy the rm-aap040 than you can find companies online that are selling this remote such as I found this: [Link: remotecontrolscenter.com] and it says it's in stock. However most the universal remotes listed in this thread sound like they will be cheaper than the price listed on that page, but it gives you an option. You know that the original will be able to work all the functions of your new tv.

I can't get the HDMI inputs to work. This is the reason why I got the remote... Any words of wisdom?

How can we help with that level of description?  What equipment are you trying to control?  What remote did you buy? What do you want to do with the HDMI inputs, have you done any EFC programming, and what behavior do you get?
