Pop up, slide out or drop down, there are hideaway options for every type of screen.TVs are a fact of modern life. According to Nielsen’s Television Audience Report, the average American home has 2.86 TVs.
Hopefully, yours are of the flat-panel design. They’re much less obtrusive than old-fashioned CRTs and can squeeze into just about any space.
Still, a screen is a screen — not much to look at when you’re not watching something on it.
There are lots of ways to conceal screens, and we’ve compiled some of the most creative solutions for your consideration.
Flipping OutYou’ve probably seen those small LCD TVs that flip down from the underside of a kitchen cabinet. You can implement the same hinging action for a larger TV in a bedroom or family room. The difference is that the TV will rest on the ceiling, making it a good alternative if there’s not enough space within the ceiling for a TV that descends vertically.
Rising to the OccasionIf there’s no space above the ceiling, no room for a cabinet or no available closet, what’s left? The floor, perhaps? Electro-Kinetics, among others, can fabricate a lift to raise a TV of any size from beneath the floor. The trick with this design, says company president Eric Andkjar, is determining how high you want the TV to go.
