I have an X10 RF receiver [Link: smarthome.com] set up for a and an x10 light on A1 and A2 and an MX810 remote without the RF base.

I tried unsuccessfully to trigger the above X10 by installing two devices (x10-3 and X10-2) (which are the ABC, 123, codes and ON/OFF, DIM, etc

Then I set the RF Setup menu for the MX810 to RF signal and I tried the receiver as default and as an X10 device with base code of ID-A - but neither worked.

Is X10 control possible or do I need to buy something else here??

You need an IR543 to send out the codes over house wiring. X-10 transmits signals via house wiring and is neither IR or RF. The IR543 will convert IR signals to the house wiring. You need to point the remote at the IR543 or attach a flasher from an MRF 260/350 or MSC-400.

I knew about IR control - but I thought RF control was also possible

It is possible with X-10s remote, I doubt it would work with the MX-810. There is no remote currently that learns RF codes and frequencies. That remote is specifically for X-10 and must be used with their wireless receiver. That receiver is designed toy work with that remote and other X-10 wireless products. It would be shear luck if the MX-810 or any other RF remote would work with that receiver. It would have to be on the same frequency and use the same RF protocol.

You need the IR-543 (ugly wired remote with IR blaster) and you have to set it to A or whatever letter you use. (as long as they're all the same)

Your RF X-10 remote(s) will still work RF. I own the mx980/mrf350 and use it for a 14 X-10 devices setup and it works like a charm. If you set your remote on RF you need the RF base station, otherwise it sends RF but there's no destination.

I go RF from the remote to the rfx250 wired from rfx250 to mrf350 IR from mrf350 to IR-543 and RF from IR-543 to lights/fan/appliances.

Is that clear?

You can simply go IR to the 543 an it will go RF to your lights.

Hope this help.

Jack

Yes...thanks.

My car has a RF garage opener that also works on Home Automation - and I always (wrongly) thought I needed an RF remote.
