Hi,

I'm about to purchase the MX-980 and am wondering about the possibility to use it to control the Sonos music system. I know the Sonos comes with its own remote, but it would be helpful to have the MX-980 offer (even limited) functionality if the Sonos remote isn't handy.

I read that the Pronto can not be used with Sonos, so I'm assuming that the MX-980 is similar. However, would love to hear from someone definitively.

Thanks.

It is my understanding the Sonos remote uses UPnP( universal plug and play wifi) to control the product. I don't think it will accept any IR signals at all.

Thanks.

So is it also true that if I have any remotes that operate on radio frequency (e.g. our bed!), the MX-980 would not be able to control it?

No we're not running a "professional establishment" here! Our bed can simply be controlled to incline up and down. Certainly not something that we need to program into our URC, but just want to know all the possibilities.

The Sonos doesn't use IR so there is no way to control it with the remote. You might be able to cobble together a PC based solution that you could connect to via IR or 232. I have the Sonos and like it, but the lack of external control options or local input override just plain sucks. Make sure you send an email to Sonos requesting IR control as an option. Everytime I ask they tell me I'm the only one who wants it.

You could use a base station like the MSC-400 for automating the bed. Just add relays and that would work. Very similar to automating a projection screen using the relay outputs. The 400 gives you LOADS of control options, you just need the imagination to put them to work.
