I give up! Anyone want a cheap 980????

I completely reinstalled Vista, It was time to clean it up anyway. I have no device issues. I installed the 6.1 version of windows mobile device center (WMDC). I know it works because i was able to to plug in my new Sprint TOUCH phone, it goes through the device driver update then launches WMDC which recognizes my phone and syncs with no problems.

I installed an updatable version of MX-980 Editor. Program works fine. I created a test file with simple button layouts. I plug in the Remote and Vista sees it and tries to automatically update the driver. You are not given the option to direct it to the location the mx-980 editor install placed the drivers. (C:\Program Files\Universal Remote Control, Inc\MX-980 Editor\Usb)

I get the error "windows found driver but encountered an error attempting to install it. (URC USB Sync MX) The system cannot find the file specified. Contact the manufacturer.

remotejr (forum member) was kind enough to suggest (in another misplaced thread on my part) going to the device manager and point the 980 to the drivers in the URC folder previously installed on the C: drive. This would be simple enough except the remote is not listed in the device manager since it never finished installing in the first place.

I am extremely frustrated to say the least.

Has anyone had similiar issues? Or am i missing something simple. All i can think of is that the driver file in the C:\Program Files\Universal Remote Control, Inc\MX-980 Editor\Usb folder for Vista is corrupt or not compatible with Vista Ultimate.

I am running:

Vista Ultimate

MX-980 Editor Version 1.00.002
IRDB version 1.82
Manager Version 1.0.2007.10221

I know this is a newbie issue.... but hey, you have to start somewhere. Any suggestions or help would be wonderful.

On a positive note....the remote looks really cool!!! *snicker*

1. Connect remote to Vista
2. If Vista cannot find drivers, go to Device manager (right click "My Computer" / Properties / Harware / Device Manager
3. If the correct drivers were not installed; device manager will identify these device as either "unknown device" or "mobile device" with a yellow question mark.

4. If you see anything similar in device manager, double click / choose the advance option / browse to C:\Program Files\Universal Remote Control, Inc\MX-980 Editor\Usb then click next to complete the Wizard

***Note the remote muct be awake to complete to process***

5. When the correct drivers are installed, Windows Vista detects the MX-980 has a "MOBILE DEVICE"

I know without a doubt that this works b/c i'm also using Vista Ultimate

I again appreciate your taking the time to reply remotejr However, I dont think your grasping my issue. I am well aware of the device manager. It never recognizes and puts the remote there because when i first plug the remote into the usb port, vista trys to find the driver...after a few minutes, i get an error as stated above ie.

I get the error "windows found driver but encountered an error attempting to install it. (URC USB Sync MX) The system cannot find the file specified.

It never makes it to the device manager. All i can think is i have some corrupted files that were created with i ran installation of the editor.

Have you uninstalled MX-Editor and reinstalled?

Best regards,
Dale

Got it working.... Had to kind of fool Vista.

I uninstalled editor and all folders left over in C:\Universal Remote Control, Inc.

I then plugged in the remote so it then went to look for driver. Of course it didnt find it and prompted me to manually direct it.

While that window was open I reinstalled the editor.

Once the editor was intalled i was able to redirect the driver install to proper vista folder.

All working now!!!!

Apparently, when Vista went to c:\Universal Remote Control, Inc to grab driver, it was getting the wrong one and therefor aborted saying it had a problem installing it. I assume it would work to just abort the initial driver install as well leaving an unspecified device in the device manager.

So in other words... its best to hook up the remote before installing the editor.

Thanks for the replys guys!!!

Interesting Solution. Thanks.

I'm sticking with XP Pro for now and will transfer over to my

Vista laptop once I know for sure most driver and activesynch errors have been taken care of.

There is another way.
1) Let the install fail - you will not be able to talk to the remote
2) Disconnect the remote
3) Open the device manager
4) Plug in the remote
5) Before it goes away, open the properties on the new unknown device
6) Update the driver to the one in the URC Vista directory
7) After it installs, unplug the remote
8) plug in the remote and it should now show up
9) Select Connect in the URC remote manager and download away

At least this worked for me...

Saves you from having to uninstall the software...

I tried this, many times *sigh*... for some reason, i think vista assumed the xp version of the driver was the appropriate one and aborted the install. I never got the unknown device in device manager. That was why i was so perplexed. I have it working. I was thinking of trying it all over and instead of uninstalling the software, just placing the vista driver in the root of the URC folder to see if Vista finds it there rather than a sub directory. Just plain weird in my opinion. Then again, its working so maybe i wont touch it at all *grin*. Though i am curious.

Hmm,

Interesting. I guess like you said it installed the wrong driver and it failed to load, therefore preventing you from being able to "update" the driver. As you said, now that it's working the better thing to to would be to leave it alone. However, for completeness, you might have been able to go to the windows\inf directory, determine which ones are for the remote (search for URC, and check which ones actually have to do with the remote), and move the offending inf and ".sys" files somewhere else. Of course, just like messing with the registry, this can "brick" your computer if you guess wrong :-(.
