The rear IR port is a stereo mini, 5v, gnd, signal
For the HM-31 and the DV-983H, BDP-83 use a 3.5mm head which includes a tip, ring, and sleeve (<=||=||=|). The tip is a 5v signal, the Ring is the IR signal, and the sleeve is the ground. Most standard 3.5mm cables are just the tip and the sleeve (<=||=|). With a standard 3.5mm cable the ground signal is not present, which prevents the signal from being processed correctly. You will need a 3.5mm cable at at one end has the tip, ring and sleeve and at the other end has the tip and sleeve only
