Another variation of this which would work in the on/off scenario is instead of making the text box 'visible' on the XP-8 flag, just make a text box, click on the yellow Variable button and select the flag you want to track.  When {var} comes up, click on it and edit the text for the True and False states.  So the text is always visible, but now it displays "CD Player On" for True and "CD Player Off" for False (for example).  Or you can delete the text for the False state so that it's invisible when the flag is not set.

Either way works, but man it can get hairy working with a bunch of stacked buttons that are either invisible or 8 buttons' text stacked on top of each other.  :)
