I've never seen this problem, so I'm jsut guessing.

Since the details box is blank, I suspect the software. Reinstall the editing software, reboot the computer, and try again. Which brings up --
Are you using the software that has been sitting unused on your computer since you last programmed the Pronto?
If you recently installed the software, did you reboot the computer after installation?

I've never heard of Philex, but I'm in the states. I assume that "the lead" means the USB-serial adaptor, not the lead from the adaptor to the remote. I've heard only of the Keyspan USB-serial adaptor, have heard that it never fails, have one and it has never failed with Pronto and URC remotes, and have heard that other adaptors fail from time to time in apparently random ways.

When you say

Googled and found another, but it didn't solve any problems.

do you mean you actually bought that other one and it gave you the same behavior, or that finding that other one did not give you any helpful information?

Just in case it matters, please tell us what model remote you have and what version of the editor you are using. Also, is your computer running XP or Vista? Is it a Mac that can run Windows?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
