Why do you need to turn off the 6412, all that does is turn off the display on the front? All of the internal circuitry continues to work, so that the STB can get the Guide data and manage any recordings that have been scheduled.
Although I turn ALL equipment off when not in use, I've never turned off the cable box, especially since they started including DVR capability.
