I've been using PSP for over ten years now, I found one of the best plugins out there for making 3D buttons, text, or just about anything is called Super Blade Pro by Flaming Pear www.flamingpear.com

You can use it as a trial for 21 days (I think) to see how you like it with full functionality. You do need to use it on selections for it to work. If you select a shape on a transparent background using the selection tool, then click "float selection", and then apply the plugin, you will get the best results.
