The problem is that the remotes are mass marketed online and in chains like Best Buy and Tweeter. There is *nothing* on the box or on the web pages which says you will not be able to setup the remote control once you buy it.
Authorized dealers aren't even protecting themselves as far as pricing goes, as many of them are undercutting each other. If anything they've become more aggressive with their pricing of late.
While I don't have a problem with URC limiting support to only registered customers who purchased their remotes through authorized dealers, they should have a public web page where people like I can register and get the latest s/w that supports live update. Making it the dealer's responsibilty to distribute s/w is simply not working.
