Well, I guess we can call off the dogs. It would appear my original computer may be the culprit. Or perhaps something in the earlier NeoEdit software wasn't removed when I uninstalled prior to upgrading to 2.0.5.

I brought my laptop home from work, installed NeoEdit 2.0.5. and the firmware updater. Using the laptop, and 2.0.5. as the "virgin" version of the software, I had no problems at all.

My original computer is a Sony Vaio PCV-RX370DS, running Windows XP. My laptop is an HP running Win 98.

Anyway, long story not so long, all is working well on the HP. And I'm enjoying the experience at last.
