I suspect that they thought you meant the 3 or 4 digit code that you put in a Universal Remote known as the setup code.

But in order to get any meaningful help here start by telling us what type of remote that you are trying to program the discrete codes into. I assume that since you contacted Philips that you have a Pronto. If you have an OFA remote and it responds to some of the commands what is the setup code that it responds to.

I took a quick look and every Samsung VCR that I saw responds to one of the common NEC protocols that have 256 commands and there were five different device codes. If you don't have an OFA remote, you may have to post some pronto hex if you have a Pronto so we can narrow the device down.

Once we figure out what device code (not setup code although I can probably cross reference it) that your VCR responds to then it is testing all 256 commands unless you get lucky and somebody has already done that.

There are also some work arounds. While your VCR is Off, press play (the most likely) and then any other buttons to see if they turn the unit On (other than the Power button). Then On is Play/Stop and Off is Play/Power.

GL,

Jon
