fullflava - just checking, but I counted 3 satellite speakers at the front of the room (near TV) and two passive subwoofers (ie no internal amp & therefore don't need a power point) at the back near the couch.

You're not by any chance running the subwoofers from the rear speaker outputs of the receiver are you??

If so this would explain why you are getting bass in 5 channel stereo mode (equal signal to fronts and rears) and bugger all in Dolby (only surround effects sent to rears).
