The "keypads" are merely three contact closure buttons, there is no IR control of the amplifier. RF would not work either (there is a knockout for an IR receiver; however, it is used for source control and is completey independent of the keypad control). There is also some simple logic built into the amplifier for zone on/off status and IR output control of HK recievier/zone 2 power only.
You would need to actuate the contact closures to get any operation from the amplifier. In that case, the keypads would be redundant since you could wire directly into the amplifier.
We have used this amplifer alot; just don't try to make it do more than it was designed to do. Think of it as an AudioAccess PX600 system using only KP3's. NO source control just on off and volume per zone.
