That's probably why the pre-programmed code doesn't work. The Sony and Philips TiVos have different IR codes, and the Sony came out after the Philips.

As to why you're having trouble learning the codes, I'm not sure. It seems other people are having trouble learning codes for other things, too. Maybe there's some trick to getting it to work well?
