Mark,
Thanks for your response.
I'm using a Sony 32" (El-Cheapo bottom of the 32" line - not even PIP). Also, my DSS unit is an SAT-B1 - the very FIRST generation of DSS units.
I am running from the DSS unit to a Sony ES receiver using conventional RCA connectors (Audio L/R and Video). Then I'm going Video out to the TV. I am doing the same with a Sony VCR so I can switch the inputs on the reciever and get both cable and DSS.
As for the sound problem, I think you are correct about the cause being a non-stereo signal. But it must be either DirecTV or the DSS unit's fault because like I said, I can compare against identical cable stations and they don't make the strange noises. I thought cable was inferior? :)
I called Sony and they suggested I fully disconnect my DSS unit for a few minutes. That actually did seem to help with the picture, but I haven't had time to really watch for the digital artifacts since then to see if it really cleared up the problem. But it definitely did NOT fix the audio problem.
