First, Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) has replaced the acronym DSS since DirecTV was sued a few years ago.

Which provider do you want Dish or DirecTV? Dish has some great entry level systems that look even better with first time subscriber discounts. Check out the prices at www.dishdepot.com . DirecTV has some deals also, like the $99 Philips DirecTivo at Circuit City. They would even throw in an 18" dish for a penny.

Are local channels available in your area? Do you want them? Do you like sports? All of these are valid questions since the programming varies with satellite providers.

Finally, Dish is in the process of buying DirecTV. If the deal goes through, your hardware will be worthless (all of this will take a few years). They are saying that there will be upgrades to equivalent hardware for the new combined system at no cost to the consumer.
