A few times when the kids were little, my wife and I drove separate vehicles from L.A. to Las Vegas for CES. We talked on 49 mHz walkie talkies as we drove. They had about 1000' range between the cars. But for at least a mile and a half as we drove through Barstow, we could not communicate. All we could hear was a baby monitor someone had set up somewhere that must have had a gallon behind it!
All right, I'll tell -- gallon is old ham slang for 1000 watts.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything. "The biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." -- G. “Bernie” Shaw
