If it is from the hard drive, it is getting ready to die. This is a classic computer prefailure sound. The weird part is that it only happens on playback. Or maybe that's the only time he notices it?

Don't ignore possible coincidences --

I installed speakers and a sub for a guy who later complained that the sub hummed. Weird thing -- it hummed with the source disconnected. Then it hummed with the POWER disconnected. Turned out it was his refrigerator on the other side of the wall, and because he had just gotten a sub and mentally tuned in to that low bass, he suddenly heard the refrigerator, which had been humming like that for seven years.
