MPEG is the software format. The reason some players can/cannot handle all these formats is the physical properties of the recorded/stamped layer. The player has to be able to read the disc before the software becomes an issue. Mfgr-ed discs are much easier to read and work in all players. Burned discs are not quite the same and need different wavelengths in the laser, I believe.
