I saw the following comment about the Dish Player-DVR
942 I liked its features but see it is not compatible
with MPEG 4. Does this mean it will be useless
as a receiver when Dish goes to MPEG4?

Though the 942 is an MPEG2 receiver and can not be used on the new MPEG4 satellites, it will be useful for as long as Dish Network uses the current MPEG2 satellites. This will be at least a few years and by the time that Dish Network wants to convert to MPEG4 exclusively Dish will probly upgrade you at little or no cost.

This is what DirecTV is doing for their customers.

Hope this helps,
