Carl, If you have a budget of $5k, I would highly consider the B&K Ref 20 pre/pro/tuner. This unit is fully board and software upgradable. It's the only piece in its price range that has that type of capability. Mate the pre/pro with the B&K Reference series amps and you are on your way!! They just came out with a new amp called the Ref 7250. A 200x5 channel powerhouse. This thing is over 20 inches deep!! The sound quality of the two together provide nothing but pure CLEAN power. It's just like having a source unit with a gain control. No coloration of the sound, no smoothing out the highs, just exactly what you feed it will end up at your speakers.
