You're experiencing problems almost exactly like what I experienced at one time. Long story short, the RCA units are converting the IR to RF, which just isn't reliable, and impossible to troubleshoot with any solid success. (Do check though to see if the problem only happens when you're using your microwave!)

I highly recommend ditching the RF converter setup and going all hardwired. You'll be glad you did.
