From what I remember reading about this about a year ago was that the 5.1 layout was basically the same, except that the speakers were placed at two vertical levels, one high and one low.

In other words, there were two speakers at the typical locations, one near the ceiling and one near the floor. This added an 'up'n'down' quality to the spread.
