It's not the same thing. "dolby 3" means it doesn't use the rear speakers at all.

From Kenwood's "Home Entertainment 2001-2002" catalog: "This format uses the way in which humans perceive sound to create a surround efect using just Right, Left and Center speakers. So you can enjoy an exceptionally atmospheric sound even with a simple system. Dobly 3 Stereo is ideal when you don't have sufficient space for more than three speakers."

If a Kenwood product offers PLII, it will usually specifically state "Dolby Digital Pro Logic II."
