The Varilight dimmer only remembers one ir code to operate it. Idon't think you can use a discreet on and discreet off for this. It is kind of like the TV standby button, it will only change the state of the TV, eg on to off, and off to on. These dimmers are quite cheap and they do a good job for the price. I have seen a dimmer called the X-10, this is a far more sophisticated dimmer, which allows different commands for on, off, slight dim, half dim etc. But they are expensive.
