josch, thank you. That information is very helpful. By
any chance did you happen to remove Escient from your
CX777ES and try to play the movies? Again, I'm tryinmg
to determine if the CX777ES or Escient is the problem.
I have a strong hunch that the CX777ES is the problem.
I believe that the player is having problems recognizing
Sony's use of it's own ARCCOS. The 3 movies you named
all came out in 2006 and I have found a more agressive
use of ARCCOS in the studio's latest releases. Again,
this is only a theory but I'm thinking that the software
Sony used in the DVD changer is modified from the program
used in single players.

Again, if it's not too much trouble, could you remove
Escient and try the movies with just the player.

TIA,
Erock

Hi All - I'm new here specifically trying to find an answer to a similar problem. I think I may have some interesting information for all of you and hopefully we can find a solution to what i believe is an even bigger problem.

I have an Elan VIA!DVDj controller using a Sony DVP-CX777ES 400-Disc DVD Carousel. It's been pretty good. I haven't really even had trouble with the system recognizing any disc content. I have some live music bootleg DVD's and have even started loading Humax/Tivo saved movies and it always see's a disc.

I also tend to buy a lot of new releases as they come out from Amazon or my local Stop & Shop. In the last 2 weeks, NONE of the new releases will catalog. They seem to load into the Sony player and then time out. Hence, they won't catalog and/or play in the internal Sony. But yes, ALL of them will play in my Denon single DVD player just fine.

I have a licensed home automation specialist that has been installing the AV system plus some other stuff in our house. He has a newer model of the same Sony CX777ES at his home and they all seemed to play fine there too.

I'm pretty convinced that there's some new encryption/data protection coming out with new releases that many of the older Sony players aren't recognizing. If that's the case, what are the chances that Sony will issue a firmware update in any of the near future?

Here's the list of new releases that I've had trouble with:

Happy Feat - (not sure of the co. - my mom took it!)
The Pursuit of HappyNess - Sony
Casino Royale (Disk1 only - Disk2 fine) - Sony
Eragon - FoxHome
the Holiday - Sony
Stranger Than Fiction - Sony
Blood Diamond - Warner Video

Would love your thoughts.

-Sharon
