I agree that the remotes could keep track of the volume commands they have sent, although they would not know if they had actually arrived and as such will easily get out of sync, which is preumably why mfrs don't bother. On the Meridian note, while I have not delved deeply in the 561 software yet, I would have thought that if there isn't a setup, that it would be worthwhile to send Meridian an Email requesting this in the next revision. I just received v1.3 (I think) and I know there's a new rev that is nearly due for release, perhaps being held for CES. In any case, an auto turn on level has to be cake for the chaps to do.
