FWIW The Sony remotes with a wheel control for forward and reverse play can easily be mimicked.

The remote only outputs one signal for forward rotation and one for reverse - I've labelled two buttons on my Pronto "Faster" and "Slower". On my Sony DVD each press of "Faster" steps from X2 to FF1 to FF2, each press of "Slower" reverses the process and then starts on the various slow-mo and reverse play modes.
