I don't think it's anything you did (unless you dropped the remote). Restoring the remote from the built in ROM, would leave you with a remote like it was out of the box. So it seems to be a hardware issue.
Let me say however - I have seen files from ccp corrupt remotes and cause them to need to be factory reset. But I have never experienced a situation where the ccp file could brick the remote by screwing up the ROM. But the software does firmware updates to the remote as well, so technically it's possible.
