If you have an oscillating tool, you could remove 1/2"-3/4" from the face of one piece and if necessary, have it checked. It's not hard to do. Otherwise, have one piece moved to the side- the drywallers know how to deal with this and they shouldn't put a joint over an opening, anyway.

It would fit if the studs were placed normally, but as you know, it does not always happen. There is no contractor, this is a retro job. I can hack up the 2 x 4 if I want, I just do not want to. That's why I wondered if somebody had an alternative box that is still tall.
