I've been using portal for a while now and it does have it's issues here and there but not only can you put proposals together pretty quickly, it just looks good. I have had multiple clients comment on how easy it is to go through.
Would the $89 be worth it to you to close and $10k deal? absolutely!

I used to use QuickBooks and it was very confusing for my clients. Just a bunch of line items and a large number at the very bottom.
What's the cheaper option that gives you everything portal does?
D-Tools? no..
D-Tools cloud? no
I know there are others out there but I think they are more expensive.
I do think it sucks the way that they handled it but I just consider it a business expense like having an internet connection.
And if and when they go down I'll probably go to D-Tools cloud.
I have dtools and it's paid for. It cost me less then a year of portals new payment structure. If you like or need cloud options, payment monthly is the only way you'll get it done. If you do not need a clud system, dtools is far cheaper in the long run.
