That box is probably in RF mode. Try covering the IR window ont eh box and seeing if the remote still changes channel? Also, see if you can learn the command. My guess is you will have to turn IR back on.
I find it far easier and more effective to just hold the remote against your stomach or something then trying to cover the front of the box. But a good suggestion otherwise to see if the box is in the right mode.
