I have a araknis router on my home network and have been using opendns.com's home free (for as long as 5 years +) [Link: opendns.com] which works well for filtering by category or by specific site.  Obviously they have pay categories which I would probably do if it became $20/yr.

A whitelist is included also, the dashboard helps to see all dns queries ranked by number, helps to spot the IOT crap phoning home.  My Ring, Purpleair.com particulate sensor and VOIP phone always seem to be top three daily domain requests.  For instance blocking a adserver such as doubleclick will show 500+ blocked requests for just one day at our household of 4. (which is only an example).
