I remember my first "whole house audio" system. Volume controls speaker selectors. The second one was so cutting edge...it had IR receivers in each room next to the volume controls so you could point remotes into them and control a tuner or cd player at the head end. The head end was usually a cabinet with about 12 wires in it :).
And an AV system was a stereo (at any level of quality) that had a TV or VCR connected to it, usually with a lot of noise if the audio came from the TV.
