Before that...early 90's when a big sale was a pair of big speakers, krell or levinson gear and a turn table.

I remember my first "whole house audio" system. Volume controls speaker selectors. The second one was so cutting edge...it had IR receivers in each room next to the volume controls so you could point remotes into them and control a tuner or cd player at the head end. The head end was usually a cabinet with about 12 wires in it :).
