You can use the discrete commands. It is of course better. You have to still put the variable "flag" or set variable in the power off macro. All it does is tell the remote what state it is in. This way it will know whether to run the false or true macro when you press a button with a TV is On variable macro the next time.

The MX880 does not allow you to use more than one variable in a macro at a time. You would have to step up to the MX980, MX890, MX1200, or the iOS or Android (and a couple disco'd remotes I wouldn't recommend) in order to do this
