I've got two Harmony Ultimates and I'm able to control my Nest Thermostat, Sonos speakers and Phillips Hues lighting.

Home also controls Zigbee and Z-wave Plus and costs an additional $100. But it's a moot point since the Ultimate has been replaced by the Ultimate Home.

DirecTV and Dish RF is Zigbee. Z-wave is used by hundreds of lighting and automation companies like Leviton, Honeywell, and many others. So the Home Hub system adds support of thousands more devices that use these protocols.
