Doesn't sound good.  But, it worth the trouble to check carefully that no button is hung up on the case so that it is stuck in the down position.  Try removing the batteries and press a button for 10 seconds or so.  Then replace the batteries.  While you're in the battery compartment, look to make sure that there isn't something shorting any of the 6 pins of the JP1 header together. Also try blindly doing a 980 reset:  Hold setup for 10 seconds or so, then press 9, 8, and 0.
