Try hooking it up to a PC serial port using hyperterminal or comparable to see if commands can be executed without causing the lock up. This will take the RFX out of the equation. The pioneer does not need the other pins beyond 2,3, and 5. It sounds like something may be connected to the RTS or CTS pins causing it to wait for a command.
