Does anybody have any details on the fiber cables used to connect the DVD audio to a receiver?

I just bought a DVD player and would like to connect via fiber. I have friends who make fiber patch cables for computers all the time. They think they can make cables if they get the details.

Any thoughts on where I can get details on the fiber cables?
