My suspicion is that you don't have a computer with an RS-232 DB9 connection. If this is the case, then you CANNOT use a USB cable. You must resort to either installing a COM Port PCI card or some other way to get reliable 232 or use a USB->232 converter.
All these things are discussed in the FAQ. Please have a look. The Keyspan adapter is the most reliable.
