You can buy a serial to USB adapter. I believe that recommended models are:

IOGear GUC232A
Keyspan USA-19HS

However I can't guarantee that. I purchased the IOGear myself to test out in a new system I have without USB.

For a laptop, you might be able to find a serial to ExpressCard or PCMCIA adapter, which would give you a "real" serial port. I started off buying a PCIe serial port card for my new system, but the system *really* didn't like it.
