I'm not really what you would call an 'expert' but you might want to try the Sony RM VLZ620 Universal remote control. I have the previous model, RMV-L600, and it was really easy to set up. Depending on the TV (I am using a Sony) I set mine up for one button to bring up my favorites (as far as OTA TV channels) and I just scroll down and select. It's that easy. No software involved. Like I said I am no expert and I had no problems setting this up for my wife. You can even set up macros. Amazon has it for under $20.
