All current DVD-RW formats can ONLY be read by the writing device. Pioneer is about the only one to make a standard DVD-R writer, but as mentioned it's very expensive. They've replaced the $10,000 model with a new 4.7gb $5400 model -- more info here: [Link: pioneerusa.com].
